From being ruled out of Seneca Village to priced out of Harlem, the black population has seen their communities destroyed for the entire history of NYC. BedStuy is the famous for being the last, strongest community for the black population of in New York, but is now under threat of gentrification more than ever before thanks to the disproportionate affect COVID has had on small black businesses. Building Black Bedstuy raises funds to support black-owned businesses in order to protect and uplift the black community and culture there.

NYC Nightlife United is an emergency fund that provides relief to shuttered cultural spaces (primarily minority and LGBTQ-owned) that are affected by COVID-19. Nightlife in NY plays a huge role in the city’s identity and culture, especially because many of these venues sprung up organically as necessary safe spaces for marginalized groups.

Why? Surrounding myself with new people and cultures makes me feel connected to something bigger, and somehow more in tune with myself (add music and a dance floor for exponential effect). I wouldn’t be half the person I am today without the mind-expanding moments I’ve shared with strangers.
